“This Time Tomorrow” – The Kinks (original soundtrack of The Darjeeling Limited)

I found out on the first flight that it is indeed a song about travelling (it starts with a recording of a plane taking off and everything). And it’s a cool song anyway.

J’ai decouvert pendant mon premier vol que c’est bel et bien une chanson qui parle de voyages (elle commence par un enregistrement d’un avion qui decolle et tout). Et de toute facon elle est cool.

“Charity Case” – Gnarls Barkley (The Odd Couple)

“She Knows” – Gnarls Barkley (The Odd Couple)

I bought the album on the iTunes Store before leaving and I haven’t had the time to listen to it more than once, but these are my two favorite songs for now. My favorite songs from the album St. Elsewhere are “Crazy” (because I often feel so confused…), “Gone Daddy Gone” (especially since Scott Lynch made an allusion to it on his LiveJournal – but it had always been a good song of course) and “Transformer”.

J’ai achete l’album sur le iTunes Store avant de partir et je n’ai pas eu le temps de l’ecouter plus d’une fois, mais ce sont mes deux chansons preferees pour l’instant. Mes chansons preferees sur l’abum St. Elsewhere : “Crazy” (parce que je me sens souvent perdue…), “Gone Daddy Gone” (surtout depuis Scott Lynch y a fait allusion sur son LiveJournal – mais bien sur c’etait une bonne chanson depuis le debut) et “Transformer”.

“Mushaboom” – Feist (Let It Die)

I’ve loved Feist ever since I first heard her music (thank you Laurence for telling me about her!) and this may not be my favorite song but it goes well with the other songs in the playlist. I also love “Secret Heart”, “Leisure Suite” and “Inside and Out” from the same album, and “My Moon My Man”, “I Feel It All”, and “1234″ from The Reminder.

J’adore Feist depuis que j’ai entendu sa musique pour la premiere fois (merci Laurence de m’avoir parle d’elle !) et ceci n’est peut-etre pas ma chanson preferee, mais elle va bien avec les autres chansons de la liste de lecture. J’adore aussi “Secret Heart”, “Leisure Suite” et “Inside and Out” sur le meme album, et “My Moon My Man”, “I Feel It All” et “1234″ sur The Reminder.

“Narc” – Interpol (Antics)

Another musical discovery that I owe to Laurence. I only have this album and this is my favorite song on it.

Une autre decouverte musicale que je dois a Laurence. J’ai seulement cet album et c’est ma chanson preferee.

“Leaving Today” – The Coral (Invisible Invasion)

I think I first head The Coral on the radio, but I can’t remember which song it was, I just know it was from this album. These are my two favorite songs and the lyrics are pretty appropriate: “Shut the bedroom window in the morning / Go to the shop, make plans to be leaving / In the morning” (“In the Morning”) and “I’m leaving today / Too much time’s already wasted / I know I can’t stay / So I’ve made my reservations” (“Leaving Today”). “Leaving Today” is mostly about leaving a place where one hasn’t been happy, I think, but I’m travelling so much these days that I can very often tell myself that I’m “leaving today”…

Je crois que j’ai entendu The Coral pour la premiere fois a la radio, mais je ne me souviens pas quelle chanson c’etait, juste que c’etait sur cet album. Ce sont mes deux chansons preferees et les paroles sont assez appropriees : “Shut the bedroom window in the morning / Go to the shop, make plans to be leaving / In the morning” [Ferme la porte de la chambre le matin / Va au magasin, prepare-toi a partir / Dans la matinee] (“In the Morning”) and “I’m leaving today / Too much time’s already wasted / I know I can’t stay / So I’ve made my reservations” [Je m'en vais aujourd'hui / Trop de temps a ete perdu / Je sais que je ne peux pas rester / Alors j'ai fait des reservations] (“Leaving Today”). “Leaving Today” parle surtout de quitter un endroit ou on n’a pas ete heureux, je crois, mais je voyage tellement ces jours-ci que je peux tres souvent me dire que je “pars aujourd’hui”…

“Things I’ll Do” - Northern State (Can I Keep This Pen?)

I listened to some Northern State songs when I found out they were the opening act of Tegan and Sara’s European tour. I really liked their music at the concert so I bought the last album and I actually regret not buying the official t-shirt. “Good Distance” is, I think, about people who work so hard that they don’t enjoy life anymore; I love the beginning of the song (“And if you want it, you got it / Whatever you want”) and the way they sing the chorus (“We work so hard to get it done / And then you get it done and what’s the point in that? / ’cause when you work so hard you have no fun / And then you have no fun and what’s the point in that?”).

“Oooh Girl” is… I don’t know what it’s about, I just like the lyrics, especially the beginning: “Winners never quit / Quitters never win” (that should be my motto), the “Knock knock, who’s there? Prym how have you been? / Do you still have my copy of Huckleberry Finn?” part (I would probably greet an old friend the exact same way if she had my copy of that book), and the “Oh I’m sorry, can I keep this pen?” part because it doesn’t seem to make sense. I can’t figure out what the song is about, but I like it.

“Better Already”… I don’t know. I just like it.

“Mother May I” reminds me of that song by the Andrews Sisters, “Yes My Darling Daughter”, where the daughter is about to go out for the first time and asks her mother whether it is appropriate for her to dance with a man and to let him kiss her and so on (and the mother always answers “yes my darling daughter” – I just love supporting mothers). This song is not about that at all, but the chorus is indeed “Mother may I? / Yes you may!”. I love the beginning: “Allow myself to introduce myself / I’m Hesta Prym, let me begin / I love my coffee with lots of gin”.

“Things I’ll Do” is probably about all the things a girl is willing to do as part of her job, or maybe about all she would do for a friend, I can’t tell which. I like the way she lists things: “Then I’ll cut your hair / And then I’ll clean your place”, “I’ll save your seat / I’ll pour your whisky neat / I’ll make you eat your greens / And do everything in between / Call me anytime / I’ll manage your damage / I’ll balance your budget / And make you a sandwich” and “Do your chart, do your math, and your laundry too / And these are just some of the things I’ll do”.

J’ai ecoute quelques-unes des chansons de Northern State quand j’ai appris qu’elles faisaient la premier partie de Tegan and Sara pendant leur tournee en Europe. J’ai vraiment aime leur musique au concert donc j’ai achete le dernier album et je regrette de ne pas avoir achete leur t-shirt. “Good Distance” parle, je crois, des gens qui travaillent si dur qu’ils ne profitent plus de la vie ; j’adore le debut de la chanson (“And if you want it, you got it / Whatever you want” [Et si tu le veux, tu l'obtiens / Tout ce que tu veux, peu importe ce que c'est]) et la facon dont elles chantent le refrain (“We work so hard to get it done / And then you get it done and what’s the point in that? / ’cause when you work so hard you have no fun / And then you have no fun and what’s the point in that?” [On travaille si dur pour que ca soit fait / Et ensuite c'est fait, et quel est l'interet ? / Parce que quand on travaille si dur on ne s'amuse pas / Et si on ne s'amuse pas, quel est l'interet ?]).

“Oooh Girl” est… je ne sais pas de quoi elle parle, j’aime juste les paroles, surtout le debut, “Winners never quit / Quitters never win” [Ceux qui gagnent n'abandonnent pas / Ceux qui abandonnent ne gagnent pas] (je devrais en faire ma devise), toute la partie “Knock knock, who’s there? Prym how have you been? / Do you still have my copy of Huckleberry Finn?” [Toc toc, qui est la? Prym comment ca va ? / As-tu toujours mon Huckleberry Finn ? ] (c’est probablement comme ca que je parlerais a une vieille connaissance si elle avait mon exemplaire de ce bouquin), et la partie “Oh I’m sorry, can I keep this pen?” [Oh, desolee, je peux garder le stylo ?] parce que ca n’a pas de sens. Je n’arrive pas a comprendre de quoi parle la chanson, mais je l’aime bien.

“Better Already”… J’en sais rien. Je l’aime bien, c’est tout.

“Mother May I” me fait penser a la chanson des Andrews Sisters, “Yes My Darling Daughter”, ou la fille s’apprete a sortir pour la premiere fois et demande a sa mere si c’est convenable pour elle de danser avec un homme et de le laisser l’embrasser et ainsi de suite (et la mere repond toujours “oui, ma cherie” – j’adore les meres qui vous soutiennent comme ca). La chanson ne parle pas de ca du tout, mais le refrain est effectivement “Mother may I? / Yes you may!” [Maman, tu permets ? / Oui tu peux !]. J’adore le debut : “Allow myself to introduce myself / I’m Hesta Prym, let me begin / I love my coffee with lots of gin” [Permettez-moi de me presenter / Je suis Hesta Prym, et pour commencer / J'adore mon cafe avec plein de gin].

“Things I’ll Do” parle probablement de toutes les choses qu’une fille est prete a faire dans son travail, ou peut-etre de tout ce qu’elle ferait pour une amie, je ne peux pas decider lequel des deux. J’aime la facon dont elle enumere les differentes choses : “Then I’ll cut your hair / And then I’ll clean your place” [Puis je te couperai les cheveux / Et apres je nettoierai ton appart], “I’ll save your seat / I’ll pour your whisky neat / I’ll make you eat your greens / And do everything in between / Call me anytime / I’ll manage your damage / I’ll balance your budget / And make you a sandwich” [Je te garderai une place / Je te verserai ton whisky comme il faut / je te ferai manger tes legumes / Et faire tout le reste entre deux / Appelle-moi n'importe quand / Je gererai tes problemes / Je ferai ton budget / Et je te ferai un sandwich] et “Do your chart, do your math, and your laundry too / And these are just some of the things I’ll do” [Remplir une carte, faire tes maths, et ta lessive aussi / Et ce sont seulement quelques-unes des choses que je ferai].
