In which I solve the issue of getting to the airport.

I’m leaving on Saturday, and I have to get to the airport on my own; my parents will be in Normandy, so they can’t drive me there. I don’t really mind, since I’ll be on my own for most of the trip – so if I can’t even get to the airport in my own country, then I’m definitely not fit to travel alone. And I like the idea of starting the adventure on my own too – no farewells at the airport, no-one to help me carry my luggage, just me from start to finish (no one is coming to get me at the airport either when I come back).

The other times I went away, I got to the airport by car. The first time (the trip to San Francisco in 2004), my mother came to get us at the airport and drive us home. The second time, she came to meet me at the airport, but she took an Air France shuttle to get there. So I decided to take a shuttle to get to the airport (I could also take the RER train, but it would take forever and there is always the risk of a problem on the line). But I only took it once, in the other way, and I was tired and with my mother, so I didn’t pay much attention to where the stops were.

I was a little worried about whether the stop in Paris was hard to find and how I would get there from the apartment, so I decided to try doing it during the week so I’d have a better idea of how it will be on Saturday (of course, I did not intend to go all the way to the airport, only to the shuttle stop in Paris). So I tried it today after class. I knew that the shuttle stop is near the Palais des Congres, near the subway station Porte Maillot. I didn’t want to take the subway to get there, though, because the gates are narrow and it would be very difficult, maybe impossible, to get in with my suitcase. So I had to take the bus. Part of line 73 runs between La Defense and Porte Maillot, so I took that bus. I got off at the wrong stop (I should have gone one stop further) but that was all right because I could see where the bus went after I got off and I simply followed it until I arrived at the next stop, the one where I’ll stop on Saturday. Then I walked to the Palais des Congres and there were signs indicating the shuttle stops, so it was easy from there. It took about 30 minutes to go from La Defense to the shuttle stop, and I walked more than I needed since I didn’t get off at the right stop. Getting to La Defense shouldn’t take too long, even if I need to walk (and I probably won’t).

So I have to be at the airport at least 2 hours in advance, but I’m counting two and a half because it will be the start of spring vacation in Paris and there might be a lot of people at the airport. I don’t know how long it will take to get from Paris to the airport, so I’m counting one hour and a half just in case. And I’m counting one hour to go from the apartment to the shuttle stop, so that means I need to leave 5 hours before the flight leaves, and I’ll probably leave half an hour before that just to be sure. That means I should leave between 7:30 and 8AM, which is fine – but I really need to get everything ready early on Friday night so that I can go to bed early and get a good night’s sleep.

Je pars samedi, et il faut que je me débrouille pour aller à l’aéroport; mes parents seront en Normandie donc ils ne pourront pas m’emmener en voiture. Ca ne m’ennuie pas vraiment, puisque je serai toute seule pour la majeure partie du voyage – donc si je ne suis pas capable d’aller à l’aéroport dans mon propre pays, je ne suis vraiment pas faite pour voyager toute seule. Et j’aime bien l’idée de commencer le voyage seule, aussi – pas d’adieux à l’aéroport, personne pour m’aider à porter mes bagages, juste moi du début à la fin (personne ne vient me chercher à l’aéroport quand je reviens).

Les autres fois que je suis partie, je suis allée à l’aéroport en voiture. La première fois (le voyage à San Francisco en 2004), ma mère est venue nous chercher à l’aéroport et nous a ramenés à la maison. La deuxième fois, elle est venue m’accueillir à l’aéroport, mais elle a pris un car Air France pour y aller. Donc j’ai décidé de prendre un de ces cars pour aller à l’aéroport (je pourrais aussi prendre le RER, mais ça prendrait une éternité et il y a toujours le risque qu’il y ait un problème sur la ligne). Mais j’en ai pris un seulement, dans l’autre sens, et j’étais fatiguée et avec ma mère, donc je n’ai pas tellement fait attention aux arrêts.

J’étais un peu inquiète et je me demandais si l’arrêt à Paris est difficile à trouver et comment je ferais pour y aller de l’appartement, donc j’ai décidé d’essayer de le faire pendant la semaine afin d’avoir une meilleur idée de ce qui se passera samedi (bien sûr, je n’avais pas l’intention d’aller jusqu’à l’aéroport, seulement jusqu’à l’arrêt du car à Paris). Donc j’ai essayé ça aujourd’hui après les cours. Je savais que l’arrêt est près du Palais des Congrès, près de la station de métro Porte Maillot. Je ne voulais pas prendre le métro pour y aller, cela dit, parce que les portillons sont étroits et il serait très difficile, voire impossible, d’entrer avec ma valise. Donc il fallait que je prenne le bus. Une partie de la ligne 73 va de La Défense à Porte Maillot, donc j’ai pris ce bus-là. Je suis descendue au mauvais arrêt (j’aurais dû continuer jusqu’au suivant) mais ce n’était pas grave parce que je pouvais voir où allait le bus une fois après que je sois descendue et je l’ai tout simplement suivi jusqu’à l’arrêt suivant, qui est celui où je descendrai samedi. Puis j’ai marché jusqu’au Palais des Congrès et il y avait des panneaux qui indiquaient la direction des arrêts de car, donc à partir de là c’était facile. Ca m’a pris à peu près 30 minutes d’aller de La Défense à l’arrêt, et j’ai marché plus que nécessaire puisque je ne suis pas descendue au bon arrêt. Aller à la Défense ne devrait pas prendre trop longtemps, même si je suis obligée d’y aller à pied (mais ça ne devrait pas être le cas).

Donc, il faut que je sois à l’aéroport au moins deux heures à l’avance, mais je compte deux heures et demie parce que ce sera le début des vacances scolaires pour Paris et il pourrait y avoir du monde à l’aéroport. Je ne sais pas combien de temps ça va prendre d’aller de Paris à l’aéroport, donc je compte une heure et demie juste au cas où. Et je compte une heure pour aller de l’appartement à l’arrêt du car, ce qui veut dire qu’il faut que je parte 5 heures avant le départ de l’avion, et je vais probablement partie une demi-heure en avance juste pour être sûre. Cela signifie que je dois partir entre 7h30 et 8h, ce qui est parfait – mais il faut vraiment que tout soit prêt tôt vendredi soir pour que je puisse aller me coucher de bonne heure et avoir une bonne nuit de sommeil.
